It develops a multidisciplinary and multicultural understanding of the dialectic of violence, the nature of war and the evolution of its conduct, its regulations in international society, with emphasis on the different types of actors, structures, processes and norms that characterize the resort to war. The first half of the course reviews the historical and philosophical foundations of the phenomenon of war and its constitutive institutions, from the ancient civilizations to the present. The second half assesses selected theoretical perspectives of the impacts of technology on the conduct of war, and its legal, social and economic effects, as well as its ethical implications. |
