Janet Warner Travel Award

Janet Adele Warner (née Jabour) 1931-2006

The Janet Warner Travel Award has been established to honour and celebrate the life of Janet Warner. Members of the Glendon English Department, along with Janet’s family, have agreed that the most appropriate way of doing this would be by creating a travel scholarship in her name. It is a cliché, but we all know, as Janet did, that travel broadens, enriches, even humanizes. To remember her by enabling some of Glendon’s deserving students to experience more of the world is a project of which Janet would wholeheartedly approve.

Janet was a great "mental traveller", to use the title of one of Blake's poems, not only in her work on Blake and her exemplary teaching of a wide range of English literature but also in her interests in related fields such as painting and music. Always an avid reader of novels, both classic and contemporary, her own novel, Other Sorrows, Other Joys, was written and published during her retirement. She was at work on a second novel which she was unable to complete before her death.

Throughout her life, Janet was also a keen traveller in the more conventional sense. Of her many journeys, probably her most adventurous undertaking was when, apart from a guide or two, she went hiking alone through the foothills of the Himalayas. Even after her last operation in November 2005, she was able to squeeze in a visit to Barcelona before returning to her home in Aldergrove to organize another splendid Christmas. Unfortunately, it was her last.

Gifts to celebrate and honour Janet Warner’s life and love of travelling may be made to the Janet Warner Travel Award to benefit a Glendon student and allow them to experience more of the world. Candidates will be chosen by application, and both academic standing and the nature of the projected travel will be taken into consideration.
