Glendon Student’s Work in Contemporary Nigerian Painting Exhibition

Glendon student Melanie Lindayen is one of six artists whose works are on display in the Nigerian High Commission's current exhibition on contemporary painting by Nigerian and Nigerian-Canadian artists: a Canadian first. Currently on view at the Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery of the Columbus Centre, the exhibition runs from September 8th to 28th.

Possible - Melanie's work on display at the current exhibition

A native of Alliston, Ontario, Melanie Lindayen is a third-year International Studies student at Glendon. In the past she has participated in the Headwaters Art Festival, McLaren Student Art Show, and the Marion Drysdale Award. She continues to study, as well as show her work in Toronto and is currently exploring global themes with narrative portraiture. Like her own multicultural heritage, her recent compositions are “mix mix,” inspired by impressions from her travels and coming together as part postcard and part love letter to people she has met and worked with at different cross-sections of time and space.

The exhibition at the Columbus Centre introduces contemporary Nigerian painting to many in Canada who have never experienced it before. A new generation of painters from Nigeria and the Nigerian diaspora is just emerging onto the global stage through initiatives such as the World Bank's recent art program "Africa Now!" which recognizes that all people, whether they are rich or poor, forge ideas, mold dreams and create art.

The opening reception, this Thursday, September 10th from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Columbus Centre, is hosted by the High Commissioner of Nigeria, with everyone welcome. The Joseph D. Carrier Art Gallery of the Columbus Centre is located at 901 Lawrence Avenue West, just west of Dufferin, within easy access of both the Glendon and Keele campuses.
